Tips for translating your explainer video

We’ve noticed a lot of tech companies have the need to have their explainer video in multiple languages.  A friend sent me this pic recently and it made me smile:

Translating your video could be tricky. We’ve made a few videos in Spanish and French, and thankfully have omitted disasters like the one above.   The biggest issue with translation is timing.  The sentence that takes 10 seconds to say in English might take 13 seconds to say in Spanish.  As a result – 3 more seconds of animation needs to be created.  Sounds easy? Not always.  Sometimes the timings are just so sticky that either the visuals get awkward or the voice over sounds too fast or too slow.
If you’re hiring an animation company, here are a few tips:

Make sure your animation company includes additional animation in your quote – you don’t want to be trying to get a voice over to fit in the exact same visuals as the English/original version. If they’ve allowed some budget to create extra artwork and animation, it means that they can design the video around the voice instead of vice versa.A couple hundred dollars extra could save you hours of frustration (and save your video from sounding really creepy)
Make sure you have a native speaker who translates the script exactly (not 2nd language “fluent” speaker, native)
for the voice over, do your own research and make sure that you have the right “accent”. There are so many different dialects/accents that might sound really strange to your local audience.  For example, people in Latin America really don’t like the Spanish (as in people from Spain’s) accent. People in Argentina think that the Chileans sound crazy.
